Everydayhealth.com interviewed Amy Hess-Fischl, (RD, CDE, of the University of Chicago Kovler Diabetes Center). Here is what she says about drinking water and dry skin:

“Unless the individual is severely dehydrated, drinking large quantities of water will not prevent dry skin, Basically, the moisture level of skin is not determined by internal factors. Instead, external factors such as skin cleansing, the environment, the number of oil glands, and the functioning of these oil-producing glands determine how dry the skin is or will become. The water that is consumed internally will not reach the epidermis [the top layer of the skin].”

So with that in mind here are THE BEST Ways to get super hydrated skin this winter.

1. The Cleanse

Every good skin care routine starts with a good cleanse. Cleaning your skin is something that either you were taught to do or you just do. Our top tip for cleansing is to purchase a soap free wash. Soap and detergents can strip the skin of essential natural oils. A good cleanser should simply remove dirt and gently restore your skin. 2. Temperature

3. Put The Moisture Back In

Make sure you moisturise as much as possible. Ideally, immediately after the shower is perfect, your pores are open and damp. Leave your skin slightly damp and then moisturise. Doing this will allow your skin to soak up the goodness and lock in the moisture from the shower. If you're like me and you forget to put moisturiser on try leaving a moisturiser in your bag, car, bathroom and or one next to your lounge. This will make it easy to remember.

4. Look for Quality Ingredients

We look at what's on a food label, why not do the same with your skincare? Look for Natural Moisturising Factors (NMF’s) like urea, amino acids, hyaluronic acid, triglycerides, lactate, linoleic acid, glycerine and sodium PCA. They are like the components of your skin, so your skin absorbs them readily. Harmful chemicals like sodium laureth sulfate are used to clean oil off car engines. Imagine what that is doing to your skin!

5. Promote Healthy Oil Production

Consume good amounts of healthy fats such as omega-3 fats, organic butter, flax oil and coconut oil.

These supply valuable fatty acids that support the production of sebum and the skin's natural protective oils which will enhance your body's ability to moisturise skin from the inside.

When looking at skincare choose products with Jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil, shea butter and cocoa butter. All of these promotes the healthy oil production which will nourish your skin.
