We all know that feeling… it starts with a slight tickle in the back of your throat. You swallow a few times just to see if it's true… Yes a sore throat is imminent.

Some of us just push through it, in denial that it's actually a sore throat. This usually results in some sort of cold or flu, but there are some things you can do to prevent and alleviate this annoying winter ailment.

To reduce the chances of developing a sore throat this winter, it is important to strengthen your immune defences by maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. We thought the following tips may help:

1. Your Hands
Wash your hands often and make an effort to keep them away from your eyes, nose and mouth. You'll be less likely to catch a cold or flu. Keep an alcohol‐based hand sanitiser handy for times when water and soap are not available.

2. Your Home
Humidify your home. Adding moisture to the air will help keep it from drying out and prevent the lining of your throat from becoming too dry. If you don't have a humidifier, place a heat proof bowl of water on your radiator each night.

3. Your Veg
Eat fresh fruit and vegetables especially those rich in vitamin C as much as possible.

4. Your Liquids
Consume adequate amounts of fluids especially water, but also include green or herbal tea, vegetable juices and warm soups.

5. Your Toothbrush
If you're plagued with a sore throat that seems to come back time and time again, buy a new toothbrush. Bacteria collect on the bristles, and if you injure your gums as you brush, they can enter your system and re-infect you.

And if you do all of the above and you still happen to get that annoying first sign of a cold….Well Plunkett Pharmaceuticals has sourced your new favourite lozenge from our honey-loving country next door, New Zealand.

Don't take our word for it:

HoneyBlis K12: A True Story

My daughter Tara (26) has been prone to throat infections from a child. Doctors said she would grow out of it, but Tara still suffers from sore throats every winter. Tara had so many antibiotics as a child, that it destroyed her baby teeth, and gave her tooth decay, multiple fillings and caps. I recently gave her a pack of HoneyBlis K12 probiotic lozenges to help defend against throat infections and for her to take as soon as she felt a throat infection coming on.

For Tara throat infections come on at night. By the next day, she has a razor sore throat that lasts for 4-5 days and develops into a week of flu-like symptoms. Normally, she doses up on Vitamin C, and as you know antibiotics are only given in cases of secondary infection. So she just suffers, and as a young mother of three, it can be pretty challenging. Not only because of the impact on her but also because she can’t stop the throat infection spreading to the children.

Well, Tara told me last Sunday that she had the start of a sore throat and it was totally averted for the first time in her life. Not just for her but for the entire family!!! She took one HoneyBlis K12 a day for 4 days, as soon as she felt the tickle in her throat. The fourth day was just a precaution to make sure it was totally gone. In just 3 days the throat infection didn't develop into a sore throat. It remained just as a tickle and then disappeared.
